When the Rodeo made its appearance in 1990, animal-rights activists cried foul because they alleged that the name glorified a cruel and callous blood sport. Isuzu kept the name and the Rodeo became the first SUV to win the Alcon Winter Rally, a 4,133-mile trek driven during an eight-day event beginning in Seattle, Washington, and ending in Anchorage, Alaska. Since the rally involves driving along the Arctic Circle, it is punishing for both car and driver and the vehicle that can survive this unforgiving trek deserves bragging rights of the highest order. The Rodeo was victorious again in 1996. Along with the Rodeo, Isuzu introduced the sporty little Amigo. A smaller and more affordable SUV, the Amigo was in production for only nine years despite its popularity with younger Americans. Other short-lived models include the Oasis Mini-van (4 years), the Hombre (5 years) and the I-Mark, which lasted only two years. The Axiom, which was only in production for three years, earned Isuzu the very prestigious Best of Whats New Award from Popular Science in 2003 for its 3.5 liter, direct-injection V6 gas engine which was introduced as standard equipment on the 2004 Axiom and available as an option on the 2004 Isuzu Rodeo. This particular engine is the first direct-injection gas engine offered on any sport utility vehicle in the United States market. In 1993, the company produced its last passenger vehicle, and in a joint venture with Subaru and Honda, the Honda Passport took the place of the Rodeo. Isuzu is now known more for its small and mid-size trucks which it began producing in earnest in 1982 with the Pup and continues today with the gas and diesel Isuzu Pickups so popular with large corporations purchasing fleet vehicles.
