1973 Chrysler engine got rained on and will not start! help!? Hi, I have a 1973 23 ft Chrysler commodor. It has a I/O chrysler 318 I though? But someone told me it is a Volvo-penta with a chrysler name on it. I left it out with the engine cover off one night not knowing it was going to rain, but it did rain! now it will not start. It turns and turns but will not start. What could have gotten wet to do this? anything an easy check or fix? thanks.
Wow - still having grief with that old boat? Not to worry- real common with old boats. Once you get the sh1t fixed it will be more fun than a barrel of monkeys- and you will know all about it so you can get the thing going under any circumstances.(hope the water pump worked out!) So on to the repair--First is ;check the resister in the ignition. It is about $2.50 at napa and will kill the ignition quicker than anything. Your problem is most likely not related to the "rainy night". I've seen these run up just soaked in dew and rain. Once fixed it will also. The next most likely problem would be the pick-up under the ignition cap. These are straight out of automotive as is the rest of the ignition. I've gone to the local wrecking yard and picked up an entire ignition from an old Plymouth or dodge to use for "replacement" diagnosis. You have only one difference and that would be the number of pins in the ignition controll box. Make sure you get the right one. Now if it has points and a coil w/condensor- all bets are off. Your not likely to have a fuel problem as it ran earlier, but you might check the fuel system ( just chuck a table spoon full of gas down the hole and try again). If it fires, get back to us. You might have some condensation in the ignition cap. I had a VW once -well that's another story. Pop the cap and look for little balls of water round the contacts and the rotor. (get the grey/tan one it is for the higher voltages)
