However, Lexus had based the IS300 on the Toyota Altezza sold in the Japanese market. Lexus conceived this car not as a luxury car but as performance car. Therefore, there were some growing pains for Lexus as they tried to adjust that image. Learning from their difficulties in Japan, Lexus retrofitted additional luxury content and included a larger engine, the 3.0-liter already used on the Lexus GS 300 sedan at the time, on the IS300 that they sold in the United States.

Paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission, the 3.0L engine produced 215 horsepower and 218 pound-feet of torque. Even though this Lexus IS300 for sale managed 0-60 mph in just a hair over 7 seconds, U.S. automotive critics complained loudly that Lexus failed to include a manual transmission. Lexus responded to that criticism by including a 5-speed manual transmission as an option for the Lexus IS300 for sale in 2002. Also in 2002, Lexus introduced the IS300 SportCross wagon.

At the turn of the century, consumers didn't associate Lexus with sport. Rather, Lexus was a name synonymous with "affordable" luxury and refinement, but that all changed when the company launched the Lexus IS300 for sale in 2001. The IS300 was a compact, rear-wheel-drive sedan that screamed performance, and it provided a level of intuitive control that was unlike anything else at that price point.

Fortunately, that initial Lexus IS300 for sale didn't focus on performance at the cost of everything else. This sports car understood style as well. It boasted a clean wedge shape, and it came in a color palette that Lexus intended to seize your attention. It was obvious from the word go that Lexus was targeting a more youthful crowd than they ever had before.

The interior of the car felt and looked different from anything anyone had seen in previous Lexus models. There was a chrome shifter ball, drool-worthy drilled aluminum pedals, and racing-inspired watch-dial-style instrumentation. However, in some areas, the interior came up short against the competition in this segment. From some perspectives, Lexus had taken a step back in terms of luxury in order to offer all of this performance and style.

No longer sold, the IS300 models make a great deal of sense for the enthusiast as well as the person who just wants a dependable used luxury car. Manufactured from 2001-2005, all of the IS300 models after 2001 have all of the amenities and safety features that the modern consumer demands. A consumer isn't sacrificing anything by targeting an IS300. Moreover, despite its limited nature, the model has never held its value in the United States. A used IS300 is far cheaper than a compatible Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, or Infiniti G35. In addition, in many cases, it offers much better performance than those comparables.

While we wouldn't suggest passing on a great deal for a 2001 IS300, we would suggest focusing on 2002 models and beyond. The 2001 models lack stability control and side curtain airbags. Less importantly, they lack a center armrest and auto-dimming mirrors. The optional full leather seating and the navigation system were not available until 2002 as well. Interestingly, despite all the noise by the American automotive media, IS300s with manual transmissions never sold well, and an enthusiast will have a difficult time finding one today.

I have a 1991 Toyota Celica with the 1.8L in it, now would i be able to put a 2.5L Supra engine in it or a 3.0?
I love my Celica and i Love Sleepers :) the 1.8 still leaves a lot of room But it would work and ur saying better off for me to get a bigger engine anyways ? cause this engine i have now is eating oil and a rod is knocking. and i really want to swap out

sure a bigger lump will go in there but then a host of other parts will also need uprating.Cheaper to go out buy a bigger engine model
